What is an IP Based Phone System?

An IP Phone system, such as Toshiba’s IPedge, uses your Data Network to place and transmit telephone calls. It can co-exist on your computer network, and share the same cabling infrastructure – no more running separate cables for your computers and your telephones!

Calls can also be initiated from a user’s computer, where the computer either controls an IP-Phone, or acts as a phone itself. For example, with Toshiba’s SoftIPT phone software on your computer, calls can be made without needing a physical phone.

What does an IPedge phone system do?

Toshiba’s IPedge phone system lets every location, branch, or office – from 8 users to thousands of users – present a single unified enterprise to the world.

A single IPedge server that occupies only 1U of rack space, or sits on a shelf, will provide your organization with the benefits of greater productivity, convenience and control over your business communications needs, such as:

  • Complete business telephone features
  • Voice mail with unified messaging
  • Unified communications with Call-Manager
  • Meet-me conferencing with web collaboration
  • Mobility solutions
  • Contact/Call Centre solutions

When will you need an IPedge?

Toshiba’s IPedge phone system is particularly useful if any of the following scenarios fit your organization:

  • High monthly call costs over your analog (PSTN) or ISDN services.
  • Branches, offices, or wharehouses in several different locations that require regular communications among them.
  • A mobile workforce, such as employees working from several different locations, or employees who often work from home. This would also apply to Hot-Desking where multiple employees who are not in the office at the same time share desks or offices.
  • A need for interactive voice responses to incoming calls that can greet callers, give out information, or route calls based on caller responses to prompts.
  • A need to combine your computer and the telephone for unified communications so that you can click-to-dial, answer, transfer calls, and more – without ever picking up the phone’s handset.
  • A need for Unified-messaging capable of alerting users via voicemail, email, and mobile phone, and to manage it all from you PC or telephone.

Which IPedge do I need?

As always, that would depend your unique requirements. Remember that every IPedge includes browser-based remote management, advanced unified-messaging, Call-Manager unified communications, and direct access to your service provider’s SIP Trunks.

As a general guideline, your selection of an IPedge will propably depend on the number of users you are likely to need. The term users refers not only to the number of employees you have, but also to voice-mail channels, and connections to other IPedges in your organization.
